For the first time in history a NATO jet shot down a Russian Su-24 this morning over the Syrian border. At appropriately 4:06 AM EST news came over the wire of a Russian Su-24 fighter jet repeatedly violating Turkish airspace, as many as ten times according to Turkish officials. Two F-16 scrambled to the Russian SU-24 and after several warnings the Russian jet was shot down.
Amature video of the jet flaming out in a steep dive doesn’t show the pilot eject, however Russian officials have confirmed the flight crew was able to eject safely. The condition of the crew is unknown and there are unconfirmed reports that the flight crew was captured by Turkish troops on the ground.
Update - This image apparently show the crew ejection. They were flying at 6,000 ft.

It isn’t... But... The Russian aircraft shouldn’t have penetrated Turkish airspace... From what I read, it wasn’t that the Russian aircraft penetrated Turkish airspace 10 times, it was that the Russian aircraft penetrated Turkish airspace, and continued into their airspace while Turkish pilots warned them 10 times over 5 minutes to leave Turkish airspace or be shot down, only to be completely ignored by the Russian aircraft. Turkey was well within their rights to down the Russian aircraft, as there was no way of assessing its intentions.

If all that is true, then yes, they were certainly within their rights to down it. In some regard, Putin may not care that the plane was shot down. For weeks, he’s been seeing just how far he can go before getting bitten. Now he knows. But what is more dangerous in my opinion is how NATO responds to this. I think it’s pretty clear that Putin is trying to fracture NATO, and if Turkey wants to react one way while NATO wants to react another, then it will certainly cause more tension inside of the organization. As to the exact location of the plane, I don’t think we can trust the Russians to be truthful. There’s got to be some sort of radar data out there. However, I doubt there will be any more incursions into Turkish airspace, for a while, at least.

Putin would rather have Ankara in Moscow’s sphere rather than Brussels. So likely prepare for the Putinesque overreacting.

Either that or they double down and send multi-plane patrols in and dare them to fire again so that they can return fire ostensibly in ‘self defense'.

Little correction.. Su-24 is not meant to be a fighter jet. It’s a fighter-bomber, light bomber, or simply an attack jet. That is, it’s primary mission is ground strike.
Overall this seems like a really bizarre story. Why do Russian jets keep violating Turkish air space? Or is something else going on?

This Thanks Giving, there is one Turkey fighting back.

They’ve been invading Turkish airspace from the moment they started bombing Syria. Turkey has been very clear in that they’d start shooting stuff down if it continued.

I thought it was 6000 meters (or about 19000 feet)?

Well, if that’s the case, then Russia has no one but themselves to blame for the shoot down of their aircraft...

Poor guys, probably just following orders. At least they landed on the right side of the border.

Putin The Bully got a bloody nose. I doubt this was an impetuous or impulsive act on Turkey’s part.

But Pooty-Poot is sounding pretty bellicose over it this morning. It’s manufactured drama to give him an upper hand. He claims that the Su-24 was hunting ISIS, but ISIS is nowhere to be found in that area. Everybody knows he’s lying through his teeth, but Turkey finally had the cajones to call his bluff.

Of course he is sounding bellicose this morning, even as he tells his air marshalls to make sure they stay a mile away from Turkey’s border.

of course if the don’t field anything but fencers that still won’t end well for them in a fight with Turkish vipers never mind they may activate their air defense system
